Frequently Asked Questions
The Craft
Are your wicks lead-free?
Absolutely. Since 1998, we have maintained a strict standard for safety. Every single wick we use is 100% lead-free, ensuring a clean, non-toxic burn for you and your family.
What safety features are built into your candles?
OOCC candles are thoughtfully designed with built-in safety features, including wick safety tabs and a patented wick straightener. We also perform ongoing, rigorous testing as part of our comprehensive quality and safety process.
What kind of wax do you use?
Our signature candles are crafted from a premium Soy-Paraffin blend. This specific combination allows for the clean-burning benefits of soy while providing the industry-leading scent throw and vibrant colors that Our Own Candle Company is known for.
Where are your candles made?
We are proud to say that every single candle is poured right here in the USA. We believe in American craftsmanship and maintaining total control over our quality from start to finish.
The Burn
How long will my candle last?
Our famous Classic Mason Jars are engineered for longevity, providing up to 100 hours of rich fragrance. Our Mini Masons offer a compact option that burns for up to 30 hours.
How do I properly maintain the wick?
Always trim your wick to 1/4 inch before every single lighting. A properly trimmed wick helps the candle burn evenly, prevents the flame from becoming too large, and stops soot/smoking.
How do I prevent "Tunneling"?
On the very first burn, always allow the wax pool to melt all the way to the outer edges of the glass jar. This "sets the memory" of the wax and ensures a smooth, flat burn for the entire life of your candle.
Safety & Care
How long should I burn my candle at one time?
A candle should be burned for no more than 3 hours at a time. Long burn sessions can lead to excessive heat buildup, especially as the wax level gets lower in the jar.
Where is the safest place to burn my candle?
Always burn candles on a stable, flat, heat-resistant surface. Avoid placing candles directly on delicate surfaces, uneven surfaces, glass tables, fabric, or anything that could be affected by heat.
Keep candles away from drafts, fans, vents, open windows, and heavy foot traffic. Uneven airflow can cause uneven burning, flickering, excess heat, or wick movement. Never leave a burning candle unattended and keep them far away from children, pets, curtains, paper, decorations, and anything flammable.

How should I safely handle the glass jar?
Avoid sudden temperature changes, as glass can become stressed when it moves quickly from hot to cold or cold to hot. A hot candle jar should never be placed on a cold surface, exposed to cold air, or handled with anything wet or cold.
If the glass breaks, stop using the candle immediately. Allow the wax and glass to cool completely before cleanup, and use care when handling any broken pieces.

When should I stop using a candle?
Under normal circumstances: You should discontinue burning a candle when there is approximately 1/2 inch of wax remaining at the bottom of the jar. This prevents the glass from overheating and protects the surface below.
If you experience problems: Stop using the candle immediately if the jar becomes cracked or chipped, gets unusually hot, smokes heavily, flickers excessively, or is burning unevenly. Extinguish the flame and allow the candle to cool completely before handling.
